Why is this important?

The lessons your children learn - even before they get to the first grade - are the lessons they LEARN FROM YOU - and these are lessons that LAST A LIFETIME!

Think about it. They learn how to tie their shoes, or that the stove can be dangerously HOT. They also learn COMMON SENSE lessons like they need to look both ways when crossing a street - all simple lessons, but invaluable. And by and large they learn these lessons from YOU.

At this young age, they also learn about money the same way...by what they SEE and by what YOU teach them.

So what are you teaching them?

Check it out. There are many aspects to money and SPENDING MONEY is JUST ONE of them. The biggest roadblock to a healthy financial foundation for many kids is the fact that "spending money" is the ONLY aspect kids are aware of.

It's less often that kids see their parents SAVING money. Or INVESTING money. Or even SHARING money, as with a church or charity. The fact is that many parents DO these things, but it's less visible. And between all the media outlets today, waving products in front of your kids, there are plenty of messages out there that speak to children about SPENDING money - but not much about SAVING, OR INVESTING. Remember, we can't know what we haven't learned! So if they don't see it from you, and they don't see it in the world around them...they simply don't learn about it.

Here's my story

As a kid, I was TOLD over and over about the importance of money. And I learned all the classic maxims: Money doesn't grow on trees, A penny saved is a penny earned, etc. But there was a PROBLEM. The lessons didn't stick, and as I got into trouble with money later in life, I started to think about WHY. What lessons from my childhood did stick and which ones didn't?

Well, after thinking about it for awhile, I almost got depressed. There was hardly anything useful that I learned that I could recite back to myself. All I got was vague memories about The Magna Carta, The Pythagorean Theorem, The Canterbury Tales, etc...And I HATE TO SAY IT but almost EVERYTHING I LEARNED HAS PROVED TO BE USELESS! I mean, in the "real world" sense.

I'm not a statistics guy

It's true, I'm not a statistics guy, but I can tell you from the many articles I read on the subject, and from my own experience, too many people are TERRIBLE WITH MONEY. So okay, here's one statistic I just looked up online: "Upon graduation, the average college student has accumulated over $3000 in debt - and that's on credit cards alone." - (Consumer Reports) I say we gotta stop this kind of nonsense; I'm telling you, being in debt and not having good money skills is bad for the business of Your Life. Why no one taught most of us this, I'm not sure...But it's a good thing we spent a whole week learning about The Hundred Years War - that's proved very useful! (just kidding).

The infamous Helicopter Ride

(and bankrupt at 25)

This is how bad it got for me. I moved out of my parents house at 20 years old. Credit card in hand. One of my best friends from high school helped me move to Manhattan. As a "thank you" I thought it'd be awesome for us to take a Helicopter Tour around Manahattan. So after we moved everything in, we drove over to the heliport, where I whipped out the ol' credit card and spent around THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS for us to see the city by air. It was spectacular. We even flew as far north as The Bronx to catch a glimpse of Yankee Stadium. I was 20 years old. This kind of RIDICULOUS SPENDING continued for 5 years - until I was so over my head I saw no option other than to declare bankruptcy. I was 25 years old. And BANKRUPT. It was terrible.

What was the problem?

For me, the problem was simple. I couldn't apply anything I was taught about money when I went off into the "real world". I didn't UNDERSTAND MONEY. I didn't REMEMBER the basics of a SOLID FINANCIAL EDUCATION. And I'm talking about the BASICS here. SPENDING WISELY and SAVING SUCCESSFULLY. Those lessons DID occur at home but they simply didn't stick.

A song stuck in my head

What I DID remember was CATCHY SONG LYRICS. You see, like most kids I used to plop down in front of the TV every Saturday morning and watch cartoons (I still do sometimes, don't tell anyone). In between programs, these unique educational cartoons would come on, and a bunch of characters would sing songs that would TEACH me something. And these were GOOD SONGS - not annoying, mindless junk, and so I WANTED to hear what they had to say. I learned about Parts of Speech, I learned how a Bill becomes a Law, I learned that it's best to eat a variety everyday, and I learned about the Planets, among other lessons. Now keep in mind that just like you, I sat in countless hours of classes as a kid and I KNOW I was taught these same things in the classroom, but it was those SONGS that made me retain the information - which I still remember, THIRTY YEARS LATER.

So I wrote some good songs

Writing memorable songs is my main talent in life. When I was in a band, a reporter for The Los Angeles Daily News wrote a review, saying about my songs that "you'd need shock treatment to clear them from your head". I'll take that as a compliment...So it made sense that I would use my talent to fill of a need. I got to work and I wrote a booklet called How To Raise Kids So They Don't End Up Broke© along with a few SONGS that kids will enjoy. I kept the booklet short and the songs simple. I figured I'd stick to the basics. Then I ran it all by friends and family and got the seal of APPROVAL.

And now I present them to you.

The booklet is a quick read, intended for the parents. It's got some short lessons and action items you can take at the end of each section - and I hope it gets you to RE-THINK the way money is presented to kids. The songs are short and memorable and will have kids singing: Money Doesn't Grow On Trees and Mom is not an ATM.

And the best part is: The Songs Are FREE. Just follow the link below.

The booklet is available NOW for the reduced price of only $7.77
